Supporting the curriculum

Curriculum Support

curriculum-supportAs iPads are often used in the classroom, it can be useful to have an understanding of some of the target areas of the curriculum . This knowledge may be useful when developing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and when planning for how a student can use technology to access the curriculum.

We have examined the General Capabilities section of the National Curriculum, targeting the key learning areas in which a student with ASD may require support including personal and social capabilities, critical and creative thinking, and literacy and numeracy. Each of our app reviews indicates which area of the General Capabilities section that the activities in the app support. This may help to guide you as to why a specific app could be chosen and which areas of the curriculum are supported through learning with the app.

The General Capabilities section within the National Curriculum span all of the key learning areas and have a broader application that link into the major areas of need for students with ASD. They focus on encouraging an individual to be a successful, confident, creative and engaged learner as well as an active and informed citizen.

The seven General Capabilities are

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Information and communication technology
  • Critical and creative thinking
  • Personal and social capability
  • Ethical behaviour
  • Intercultural understanding
