STEP 2- Create a goal


DSC_0308After thinking about the person’s needs and individual learning style you can start to form a goal. Develop a team around the individual to work together in developing goals and activities. Your team may involve: the individual with Autism, family members, teachers, therapists, support staff etc.

  • Identify an outcome: What do we want to achieve through the use of an iPad or tablet?
  • Set specific goals
  • Identify ways to measure progress: How will we know when the goal has been achieved?

Make sure that the goal you choose is SMART:

  • Specific
  • Measureable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time focused

When thinking of a goal consider the activities the person engages in daily and those they require support to complete. Any apps you choose should support the development of the skills identified in the goal rather than the skills of using the app.

It may be useful to use a goal setting template in order to clearly outline the goal, how it will be achieved and who will assist. Using a goal setting plan such as this one below can also be a useful method of sharing information with a team:
