The First-Then Visual Schedule app is designed for parents or caregivers to provide positive behavior support. The app can be used for individuals with communication needs, developmental delays, Autism or those who benefit from a structured environment.
The user can record their own voice, add their own images from their computer, internet, camera, or from the app’s own stock library to create a schedule. Visual schedules can then be used to show daily events (i.e. morning routine or therapy schedule) or steps needed to complete a specific activity (e.g. using the restroom).
Schedules can easily be created or changed “on-the-go” to help transition through unexpected changes in a routine.
FTVS HD adds video recording and a choice board mode.
What we think
There is strong evidence supporting the use of First-Then visual schedules for individuals who benefit from structured support to increase independence and lower anxiety during transitions through different activities.
The schedules are easy to make and to store, and it is easy to navigate through the schedules.
The app can be used in three different ways: “Full Screen” – In this format a larger image appears on the screen. User accesses next image on schedule by simply swiping screen to the left; “First-then Screen” – This format shows two images side by side with an arrow between images to guide the sequence of the activity; and “List Screen” – This screen allows images to be listed in a list format with a checklist.
Although motivators could be incorporated into a schedule by the caregiver, there are limited inherent motivators (e.g. green tick appearing)
This app would suit any caregiver of an individual who responds well to visual schedules.
Personalisation features include being able to choose any picture, record your own voice and create as many schedules as required.
Yes – Organisation and Independence
More optional motivating animations/sounds could be incorporated after completing a task.
Although this app can be useful for adults the theme may appear as directed towards children. Being able to change the appearance of the app could be helpful.
