Love to Count by Pirate Trio

This app teaches a series of numeracy skills through a fun, pirate themed game. Players complete a range of tasks to earn “coins” to make a word. Individual player profiles are created and statistics can be tracked for each participant.

What we think

The app uses a range of theoretically based features including supporting 1:1 correspondence in counting and corrective feedback.

Yes, the app is easy to use. The app reads the question aloud for players as well as having the question written on the screen. It is easy to play although can be a little confusing to navigate back to the home screen.

The app targets basic counting and addition skills. There is limited room for growth beyond these skills.

The app includes positive feedback for correct answers and corrective feedback when incorrect (e.g. that is too much, too little). Players work towards earning coins to make a word.

Young children with a range of literacy skills could use the app as literacy is not required for access.

The app does not have many personalisation options. Players can create their own profile by selecting an avatar from a choice of 6. There aren’t any other clear personalisation options.

Yes, the app targets counting skills as intended.

This app could be improved by allowing for more customisation including being able to level activities to better suit the players.

I liked the graphics and the variety of activities as well as the feedback provided.
