This app covers the first two years of learning to read, from matching letters and sounds to enjoying short stories. Designed in collaboration with leading academics and game designers, this app complements all synthetic phonics programs and is suitable for home and school use.

The thee extensive games include:

  • First Steps – For children who are just starting to learn letters and sounds.
  • Fun with Words – For children who are confident with early letter-sound combinations and are starting to read sentences.
  • Champion Reader – For children who are confidently reading short sentences and know all of the basic letter-sound combinations.

What we think

Teach Your Monster To Read was designed in collaboration with reading experts from Roehampton University in the United Kingdom. This app complements the UK government-approved Letters and Sounds program, and other major systematic synthetic phonics programmes.

This app is very simple to use and is accessible on PC computers as well as apple and android products. This app requires very little initial set up, which includes entering a name and designing a monster aviator. The rest of the game is intuitive and operated by single clicks.

This app allows children to progress through a series of phonological awareness and reading-skill based goals in three different levels, from matching letters to sounds, blending, segmenting, reading sight words, and reading full sentences. This app can only be used to target literacy-based goals and is limited to early readers.

There are no instant motivators available within the app. This app allows the user to select the prize they are working towards, which may increase the engagement of some users whilst also developing their ability to make choices.

This app is designed specifically for early readers or children who need additional support in reading. The simplicity of the reading words used within the app in conjunction with the graphics and sound effects may not suit older users or children.

This app allows multiple users to enter their names and develop a customisable alien aviator. There are no other personalisation features within the app.

Yes – this app supports the development of early literacy and reading skills.

This app has long introductions in some activities and scenes that may not engage users with reduced attention spans. This app could be improved by including a “skip introduction” button to reduce wait times.

This app has a large number of letter-sound combinations, CVC words, sight words, short sentences, and little stories stored within the app. The is no extra purchases and hidden costs required to access these sounds and words. This app can be progressed through with ease to match your child’s skill development.
