iReward

App Review
Additional Description

iReward is a visual reward chartapplication. It is based on a token system, where by engaging in the desired behaviour you may earn a token and when you reach a chosen number of tokens you may gain access to a reward which is represented visually.

Format iPad
Age Range early primary, late primary
Motivators noise/auditory, visual, tangible
Curriculum/Goal Areas ethical behaviours
Evidence-based Intervention Behaviour Management
Targeted Skills This app is designed to assist with reinforcing desired behaviours, and to also provide clear information on what a child needs to do, and how many times in order to access a reward or chosen motivator/activity.
Great For

Providing visual reward charts when out and about, or on-the-go. This app is useful for those wishing to manage and reinforce multiple behaviours throughout the day. Great for children who prefer or require photos (as opposed to line drawings) in their visual supports. It is easy to use. When creating a reward chart on this app you are able to take a picture to represent the desired behaviour, as well as the chosen motivator.

You can list rewards by person, so you could have reward charts for several people included on this app.

Please Consider

Consider whether your child is able to understand what they need to do in order to gain a token and how many tokens required for a reward is going to be manageable for your child.

Be mindful of the potential for repetitive behaviour, as repeatedly tapping on a token spot can create a sound which some children with ASD might find distracting or stimulating. This can be turned off in the settings.

On gaining all tokens, there is the option of having a short video or voice recording. Be aware that preset rewards may come with an existing recording but remember that it can be turned off when creating or editing a reward chart.

Generalise Skills and Knowledge

You could practice using reward charts in different settings (e.g., community outings, school) to help your child learn that engaging in desired behaviours to access a reward/chosen motivator does not just occur in one environment, but across their day.

You could make sure there are different (but motivating!) rewards for different behaviours so that your child learns that rewards are not always the same.
